Pumpkins

give us your tired, your poor,

your huddled masses of pumpkins

Do you want to hear something really spooky? The US Department of Energy estimates that 1.3 billion pounds of pumpkins are thrown out after Halloween each year?  They mostly pile up in landfills where they can’t decompose properly, so these round rotting relics will sadly contribute to greenhouse gases. It's our mission to help remedy this situation. Inspired by Lauren Singer and her blog 'Trash Is For Tossers', we will take your used pumpkins and properly compost them at the Pound Ridge Organics Farm. They can decompose to become rich fertile soil that we can use next season to sow seeds. Then the plants that grow from the new soil will contribute to feeding the community next year.

Come to Pound Ridge Organics during our market hours the week following Halloween with your used tired pumpkins - you can even smash them so they can start to compost quicker when we return them to the earth in our pumpkin graveyard.

Enjoy hot cider and treats, as you say goodbye to the pumpkins that served you well.

Are you from the city? It's even more important to compost your pumpkin in a healthy way. Pound Ridge and surroundings make a great daytrip! We look forward to welcoming you at Pound Ridge Organics.
